Greenbush - The Southeast Kansas Education Service Center is seeking applications for a GED Instructor/Para-Educator at the Lansing Correctional Facility.

Job Summary:  The primary duty for the GED Instructor is to provide instruction that meets the needs of individual students as reflected by their scores on the five GED tests that attempt to measure the core subjects common to all high school courses of instruction.  These areas are language arts writing, language arts reading, social studies, science, and mathematics. Must work closely with the staff and administration of the correctional facility, the Interlocal and other education programs.

 

Qualifications:

  Required: 

    1.  Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college/university

    2. Current Kansas Teaching Certificate/License

    3.  Valid driver's license.

    4.  Maintain current health certificate.

 

Responsibilities: 

Essential Functions:

  1. Facilitate the personal and intellectual development of students.
  2. Work closely with DOC officials in the identification and recruitment of GED students.
  3. Assist students with developing good work habits.
  4. Establish a positive learning environment and respond to the individual needs of students.
  5. Ensure that all activities conform to correctional facility and Interlocal guidelines.
  6. Communicate effectively and appropriately with all members of the correctional facility, the Interlocal and other education programs.
  7. Appropriately operate equipment as required.
  8. Support the value of correctional education.
  9. Learn and be able to apply the computer skills necessary to implement the ALS A+ GED and ESL programs.  Assist in the recognition and remediation of educational deficits.
  10. Plan and implement effective lessons based on students’ academic GED or ESL needs, using time, materials, and resources effectively.
  11. Implement activities as needed in order for the student to earn his/her GED or to achieve Literacy.
  12. Adhere to required program guidelines as defined by the Kansas GED policy manual and reference guide.
  13. Collaborate with DOC officials in the process of selecting and enrolling GED students.
  14. Monitor student progress and use the results to make instructional changes.
  15. Provide daily verbal and/or written feedback to students about their learning.
  16. Integrate practical life skills into basic skills curriculum at every opportunity.
  17. Set high expectations for students’ achievement and behavior.
  18. Demonstrate effective interpersonal relations with others.
  19. Establish and maintain a positive climate for learning through appropriate classroom management.
  20. Utilize a variety of instructional practices including verbal instruction, modeling, cooperative learning, etc.
  21. Maintain daily lesson plans that are clear descriptions of lessons to be taught.  Use phrases to clarify.
  22. Cooperate and consult with other program staff in providing services to students.
  23. Reinforce appropriate student behavior and production several times per day.
  24. Assist students in developing social skills to improve their ability to interact appropriately with others.
  25. Order and maintain an adequate inventory of materials and supplies.
  26. Maintain appropriate confidential files and provide timely reports.
  27. Give clear expectations and frequent feedback to staff members as assigned.
  28. See that correctional facility and Interlocal policies are observed during all activities.
  29. Obtain approval for all special activities and expenditures.
  30. Adhere to all correctional facility and Greenbush health and safety policies, including all precautions of the Bloodborne Pathogens Exposure Control Plan.

General Responsibilities:

  2. Demonstrate excellent interpersonal skills
  3. Maintain strict confidentiality
  4. Demonstrate proficiency in ability to produce excellent work as requested by the executive team
  5. Assume responsibility for individual professional growth by staying current with literature, research, and/or practices
  6. Demonstrate proficiency in ability to effectively and regularly communicate with Service Center employees and constituents
  7. Complete all assignments in a time-sensitive manner as determined by Supervisor
  8. Meet all safety requirements as directed by the Service Center
  9. Perform other duties as may be assigned by the Executive Director or designee

Physical Requirements:

  1. Manages all job duties with mobility, agility, and dexterity.
  2. Requires long periods of sitting and standing.
  3. Ability to lift a maximum of 40 pounds.
  4. Work in a noisy environment with many interruptions.
  5. Requires occasional in-state travel.
  6. Must work in environment that provides education to students who have been convicted of a crime by a Court of Law.
  7. May be exposed to Hepatitis B and/or other communicable diseases.

In addition to the benefit package, Greenbush recognizes the importance of continued education throughout an employee’s career and offers the Greenbush Education Reimbursement Plan to support employees in their education endeavors. The plan provides an opportunity for any Greenbush employee working at least 1,004 hours per year to be reimbursed up to $1200 per contract year for tuition costs. Employees of Greenbush meeting the hour requirement can apply to participate in the program by completing the Tuition Reimbursement Application Form. In addition, Greenbush offers a Professional License Reimbursement Program, which provides full reimbursement for professional licenses with specific Kansas licensing authorities and other appropriate authorities (a complete list can be provided upon request).
