Description

Greenbush - The Southeast Kansas Education Service Center is seeking applications for a Deaf Education Interpreter in the Northeast Kansas area.

 

Anticipated start date: February 3, 2020. Position will remain open until filled. Equal Opportunity Employer.

 

Job Summary:  Facilitates communication and provides services that will enable the student to reach his/her fullest potential in communicative situations.  The interpreter must work closely with the education team serving the deaf and hard of hearing child.

 

Qualifications:

  Required: 

  1. Proficient command of sign language systems as well as the English language.
  2. Maintain a Level 3 (minimum competency) or higher on the EIPA, KQAS, possess RID national certification or have a state approved IDP.
  3. Ability to follow the Kansas State Guidelines for Educational Interpreters and Code of Ethics, observing strict confidentiality of student records, ability s and school activities.
  4. Maintain a current health and inoculation certificate on file in the central office.

Preferred:

  1. Valid Kansas Driver’s license.

Responsibilities: 

Essential Functions:

  1. Demonstrate ability to adjust interpretation (signing and voicing) to match the level of sophistication of the language mode/system used by the recipient of services.
  2. Interpret classroom lectures, assignments, demonstrations, announcements, videos (if closed caption is available, or if student is unable to utilize captioning), group activities or discussions and student interactions.
  3. Provide necessary clarification, elaboration or adjustments in an interpreted message due to differences in knowledge base, culture, language or experiences.
  4. Communicate effectively with all members of the school district, cooperative, and community.
  5. Participate as a team member in the comprehensive evaluation, re-evaluation process, and IEP process.
  6. Interpret for special situations such as:  organizations or class meetings, conferences with principal or counselor, psychological or educational testing, IEP meetings and other school related activities.
  7. Adhere to all district and cooperative health and safety policies, including all precautions of the Bloodborne Pathogens Exposure Control Plan.
  8. Participate in off-campus activities and field trips.  The Interpreter may be required to transport students in a van or school bus. 

General Responsibilities:

  1. Work with the classroom teachers to make the necessary accommodations for the student allowing visual access to interpreter, teacher and all visual aides.
  2. Ensure that all activities conform to district and cooperative guidelines.
  3. Utilize non-class time for pre-reading and previewing instructional materials, as well as for consultation and collaboration with teachers and members of educational team.
  4. Develop an interpreter substitute folder in the event of absences.
  5. Must support the Service Center mission, goals, and objectives
  6. Must demonstrate excellent interpersonal skills
  7. Must maintain strict confidentiality
  8. Must demonstrate proficiency in ability to produce excellent work as requested by the executive team
  9. Must assume responsibility for individual professional growth by staying current with literature, research, and/or practices
  10. Must demonstrate proficiency in ability to effectively and regularly communicate with Service Center employees and constituents
  11. Must complete all assignments in a time-sensitive manner as determined by Supervisor
  12. Must meet all safety requirements as directed by the Service Center
  13. Must perform other duties as may be assigned by the Executive Director or designee 

Physical Requirements:

  1. Manages all job duties with mobility, agility, and dexterity.
  2. Requires prolonged sitting and standing.
  3. Ability to lift a maximum of 40 pounds.
  4. Work in a noisy environment with many interruptions
  5. Requires daily travel.
  6. Frequently requires signing continually in 25-minute time segments with periods of at least 5 minutes of rest in between.
  7. All levels, may require occasional physical management and lifting of students as part of behavior management procedures.
  8. May be exposed to Hepatitis B and/or other communicable diseases.

The plan provides an opportunity for any Greenbush employee working at least 1,004 hours per year to be reimbursed up to $1200 per contract year for tuition costs.
