Job Summary: Summer Camp Counselors are the primary caregivers for campers during our Day and Overnight Camps. The Summer Camp Counselor is responsible for guiding campers throughout their camp experience.
Qualifications:
Required:
- Minimum of 18 years of age
- High school diploma or certificate of equivalency
- Experience working with kids
- Valid Kansas driver’s license
Preferred:
- Those that have or are currently seeking a degree in Education, Nursing, Recreation, or a related field
- Individual seeking a career involving working with kids
- Lifeguard or CPR/First aid certification
Responsibilities:
Essential Functions:
- Assist in the direction, supervision, and organization of campers in and out of classroom settings, within activities and throughout the camp in order to meet the intended camper outcomes
- Apply basic youth development principles in working with campers through communication, relationship development, respect for diversity, involvement and empowerment of youth
- Assure campers are properly supervised at all times
- Responsible for leading and assisting with the teaching of activities
- Provide for the progression of activities within the framework of individual and group interests and abilities.
- Ensure that campers receive their medications as directed by camp coordinators
- Be alert to campers and staff needs and assist them with personal and/or health problems, and discuss with camp health manager and/or resident camp coordinator when appropriate
- Be alert to equipment and facilities to ensure utilization, proper care, and maintenance is adhered to; report repairs needed promptly to camp coordinators
- Be a role model to campers and staff in your attitude and behavior
- Follow and uphold all safety and security rules and procedures
- Set a good example to campers and others in regard to general camp procedures and practices including sanitation, schedule, and sportsmanship
General Responsibilities:
- Assist with various duties necessary for successful camp operations, meal preparation, serving, and clean-up, housekeeping, some jobs will rotate, others will be assigned
- Participate enthusiastically in all camp activities, and leading those as assigned
- Participate as a member of the Student Enrichment Team to deliver quality day programs
- Must support the Service Center mission, goals, and objectives
- Must demonstrate excellent interpersonal skills
- Must maintain strict confidentiality
- Must demonstrate proficiency in ability to produce excellent work as requested by the Director of Student Enrichment, and Camp Coordinators
- Must demonstrate proficiency in ability to effectively and regularly communicate with Service Center employees and constituents
- Must complete all assignments in a time-sensitive manner as determined by Camp Coordinators
- Must meet all safety requirements as directed by the Service Center
- Must perform other duties as may be assigned by the Executive Director or Director of Student Enrichment or Camp Coordinators
Physical Requirements:
- Manages all job duties with mobility, agility, and dexterity.
- Requires long periods of sitting or standing.
- Ability to lift a maximum of 50 pounds.
- Physical ability to respond appropriately to situations requiring first aid.
- Must be able to assist campers in an emergency (fire, evacuation, illness, or injury) and possess strength and endurance required to maintain constant supervision of campers.
- Endurance including prolonged standing, some bending, stooping, walking distances, hiking, climbing, and stretching; requires eye-hand coordination and manual dexterity to manipulate outdoor equipment and camp activities; requires normal range of hearing and eyesight to record, prepare, and communicate appropriate camper activities/programs; and with daily exposure to the sun and heat
