Description

Greenbush - The Southeast Kansas Education Service Center is seeking applications for a Certified Orientation & Mobility Specialist in the Topeka, KS area. 

 

Anticipated start date: January 27, 2020. Position will remain open until filled. Equal Opportunity Employer.

 

Job Summary:  To provide orientation and safe travel skills at a developmentally appropriate level to students with visual impairments.  To orient staff and train staff to follow through on appropriate safe travel skills within the classroom, school and community.

Qualifications:

    Required:
     1. ACVREP Certification
     2. Bachelor’s Degree Required; Master’s Degree Preferred
     3. Working knowledge of orientation and travel skills from preschool through high school; including adapted mobility devices, long cane, public transportation, etc.
     4. Maintain current health and inoculation certificate
     5. Must possess or be eligible to acquire a driver’s license
 

Responsibilities:
    Essential Functions:
     1. Provide appropriate, individualized instruction to each student on the caseload
     2. Develop lesson plans and schedules that meet the goals of each student
     3. Provide consultation and assistance to vision staff as to skills to implement in the classroom
     4. Establish open, frequent communication with parents, and all related service staff
     5. Make recommendations for time needed to implement goals
     6. Knowledge of Braille
     7. Ability to teach tactile maps
     8. Ability to teach techniques to train eccentric viewing and utilization of appropriate low vision devices necessary for orientation or travel
     9. Assisting students to understand impact of vision and to make safe travel decisions
   10. Follow through on team developed behavioral goals
   11. Participate in appropriate staff meetings as requested
   12. Establish and maintain positive atmosphere in working with staff in order that this atmosphere will be carried over for the student

 

   General Responsibilities:

      1. Must support the Service Center mission, goals, and objectives.

      2. Must demonstrate excellent interpersonal skills.

      3. Must maintain strict confidentiality.

      4. Must demonstrate proficiency in ability to produce excellent work as requested by the executive team.

      5. Must assume responsibility for individual professional growth by staying current with literature, research, and/or practices.

      6. Must demonstrate proficiency in ability to effectively and regularly communicate with Service Center employees and constituents.

      7. Must complete all assignments in a time-sensitive manner as determined by Supervisor.

      8. Must meet all safety requirements as directed by the Service Center.

      9. Must perform other duties as may be assigned by the Executive Director or designee.


Physical Requirements/Environmental Conditions:
     1. Requires prolonged sitting and standing.
     2. Requires frequent lifting and moving of boxes, materials, and equipment up to a maximum of 40 lbs.
     3. Requires extensive travel during the workday.
     4. Occasional stooping, bending, and reaching.
     5. May be exposed to hepatitis B and other communicable diseases.

The plan provides an opportunity for any Greenbush employee working at least 1,004 hours per year to be reimbursed up to $1200 per contract year for tuition costs.
