Greenbush - The Southeast Kansas Education Service Center is seeking applications for a Paraprofessional at the Juvenile Detention Center in Girard, KS.

Job Summary:  The paraprofessional assists with the day-to-day educational instruction in the learning center under the supervision of the site coordinator/designee. The paraprofessional aids in the planning of learning activities to assist students in gaining knowledge, developing skills and attaining education goals, as well as compiling reports and other clerical duties as requested by the site coordinator/designee. 

 

Qualifications:  

  Required: 

  1. Minimum of high school diploma or certificate of equivalency
  2. Must be able to work with Microsoft Office applications and have good computer skills.

Preferred:

  1. Prior experience in education and clerical work helpful

Responsibilities: 

Essential Functions:

  1. Demonstrate appropriate communication and listening skills with students, co- workers, supervisors, and visitors.
  2. Enroll new students, contact their home districts for transcripts, and serve as liaison between school districts and education staff at JDC.
  3. Send exit grades/transcripts from JDC back to home district and to new placement.
  4. Contact special education agencies to determine if student has an IEP, obtain copy, and inform JDC teachers of ability levels and any other pertinent information.
  5. Collect data for and submit semi-annual special education reports to SEK Interlocal.
  6. Send survey letters to parents.
  7. Compile student data for state reports.
  8. Accurately record attendance, maintain all data summaries and complete other documents assigned by the site coordinator/designee.
  9. Maintain positive interactions and coordination of services with local school district personnel.
  10. Supervise and assist students as needed.
  11. Demonstrate a positive attitude toward all students, staff, and parents by showing respect for the worth and dignity of each student.
  12. Supervise student behavior to maintain a focused learning environment.
  13. Refrain from any physical restraint that is out of the education staff’s responsibility.
  14. Assist with count day activities/planning as needed.
  15. Attend required in-service meetings.
  16. Is reliable, punctual; completes duties promptly, accurately, and according to timelines.
  17. Maintain the facility, or assigned area, to keep it clean and safe for students and staff, including light custodial duties when necessary.
  18. Work independently with minimum supervision when the site coordinator/designee is unavailable.

General Responsibilities:

  1. Create/provide reports upon request such as count day, end of month, daily attendance, Quicken, student database, advisory board minutes, etc.
  2. Facilitate community involvement through appropriate letters, faxes, phone calls and meetings.
  3. Maintain supply list, inventory and order supplies as needed/requested with approval.
  4. Must support the Service Center mission, goals, and objectives
  5. Must demonstrate excellent interpersonal skills
  6. Must maintain strict confidentiality
  7. Must demonstrate proficiency in ability to produce excellent work as requested by the executive team
  8. Must assume responsibility for individual professional growth by staying current with literature, research, and/or practices
  9. Must demonstrate proficiency in ability to effectively and regularly communicate with Service Center employees and constituents
  10. Must complete all assignments in a time-sensitive manner as determined by Supervisor
  11. Must meet all safety requirements as directed by the Service Center
  12. Must perform other duties as may be assigned by the Executive Director or designee

Physical Requirements:

  1. Manages all job duties with mobility, agility, and dexterity.
  2. Requires sitting and standing for long periods of time.
  3. Ability to lift a maximum of 40 pounds.
  4. Work in a noisy and crowded environment with many interruptions
  5. May be exposed to Hepatitis B and/or other communicable diseases.
