Description

Greenbush - Russell Child Development Center is seeking applications for a Bilingual Program Assistant. 

 

Purpose Statement:  The job of Bilingual Program Assistant was established for the purposes of assisting Building Blocks project staff in carrying out grant activities and providing complex and responsible interpreting and translating to/from English to the family’s native language. 

 

Essential Functions: 

  • Participates in home and community visits for the purpose of facilitating communication, increasing family understanding, and/or ensuring safety of children and caregivers.
  • Interprets and translates a wide variety of verbal and written communication(s), verbatim and idiomatic materials and conversations (interviews, seminars, articles, screenings, surveys, newsletters, forms, brochures, etc.) for the purpose of facilitating effective communication among stakeholders.
  • Verifies the accuracy of translations made by others for the purpose of reviewing and editing materials for accuracy, context, readability, grammar and style.
  • Assists with the facilitation of appropriate program referrals and the dissemination of information.
  • Assists with providing information regarding access to supports and services designed to address priorities and needs identified by families and project staff.
  • Assists project staff and families with the completion of common measures including screening and assessment tools.
  • Participates in a variety of meetings (e.g. workshops, committees, seminars, conferences, transition planning, etc.) that may involve a range of issues for the purpose of gathering and/or conveying information, supporting other staff, maintaining current knowledge; and serving as an agency representative.
  • Reports observations and incidents relating to specific children and families (e.g. accidents, health issues, family situations, safety conditions, etc.) for the purpose of communicating information to appropriate agency personnel.
  • Supports program operations for the purpose of creating an effective working environment.
  • Gathers and maintains a variety of confidential and non-confidential documents, files, lists, and records (e.g. child data, activity logs, phone logs, community resources, etc.) for the purpose of documenting activities.
  • Supports agency leadership in achievement of program goals.
  • Adheres to all professional guidelines as outlined in agency policies.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned for the purpose of ensuring the efficient and effective functioning of the agency.

 

Job Requirements—Minimum Qualifications:

Skills, Knowledge and Abilities

SKILLS are required to perform multiple tasks with a potential need to upgrade skills in order to meet changing job conditions.  Specific skill-based competencies required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job include:  proficiency in required second language; translating written documents; adhering to safety practices; operating standard office equipment using pertinent software applications; managing job tasks; maintaining accurate records; and developing effective working relationships.

 

KNOWLEDGE is required to perform basic math; read a variety of technical information; translate and write documents following prescribed formats; understand complex, multi-step/level written and oral information and instructions; and solve practical problems.  Specific knowledge-based competencies required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job include:  fluency in specified second language; correct language usage in both English and specified second language (e.g. vocabulary, spelling, grammar and punctuation); cultural social and economic background of targeted populations; program policies and procedures; agency operations and philosophy; community resources; health standards and hazards; safety practices and procedures; stages of child development and age appropriate activities; concepts of grammar and punctuation; and business telephone etiquette. 

 

ABILITY is required to schedule activities; collate data; and use job-related equipment.  Flexibility is required to work with others in a wide variety of circumstances; work with data utilizing defined and similar processes; and operate equipment using standardized methods.  Ability is also required to work with a wide diversity of individuals; work with a variety of data; and utilize job-related equipment.  Problem solving is required to identify issues and create action plans.  Problem solving with data may require independent interpretation; and problem solving with equipment is moderate.  Specific ability-based competencies required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job include:  being attentive to detail; communicating with persons with diverse cultural and educational backgrounds including those with limited English proficiency; establishing and maintaining constructive relationships; adapting to changing work priorities; maintaining confidentiality; meeting deadlines and schedules; working with interruptions; working as part of a team; and working with detailed information/data.

 

Responsibility

Responsibilities include:  working under direct supervision following standardized procedures; coordinating schedules and activities with others; and operating within a defined budget.  Utilization of resources from other work units is often required to perform the job’s functions.  There is a continual opportunity to impact the agency’s services. 

 

Working Environment

The usual and customary methods of performing the job’s functions require the following physical demands:  some lifting, carrying, pushing and/or pulling; some stooping, kneeling, crouching, and/or crawling; and significant fine finger dexterity.  Generally the job requires 35% sitting, 30% walking, and 35% standing.  The job is performed under moderate to significant temperature variations, in a variety of home and community environments with varying levels of cleanliness, and under conditions with exposure to risk of injury and/or illness.  Daily travel with potentially significant drive time is required.
